Spreading the ‘Good News’ of Sound Financial Planning
These days, if you want the kind of prosperity, peace and hope in your life for which the Bible is a guide, you need sound financial advice, says “Money Minister” C. Ernie Nivens, (www.nivenswealth.com), author of “Baker’s Dozen: 13 Insights from Highly Successful Financial Advisors.”
“I can’t tell you how many clients have had a look of fear and dread in their eyes when I first sat down with them. They were frantic with worry about running out of money in their retirement years,” says Nivens, a 20-year United Methodist minister and global church growth consultant who has focused his passion for learning on financial issues since 1990.
“As my career as a financial planner grew, I was struck by how similar spiritual advising is to financial advising. A retiree who is running out of money and is facing the uncertainty of relying on Social Security and Medicare faces quite a crisis. Essentially, they’re wondering if they can afford to live.”
For Christians, the “good news” refers to Jesus’ message of hope. Nivens says he’d like to spread his financial gospel, which includes strategies for protecting and successfully using one’s own money.
Nivens cites scripture and connects it with what Americans can do to better afford their lives and financially support others.
• 1-Timothy 5:3 – “Take care of widows who are destitute.” Many senior widows face not only destitution, but also the need for long-term care. With the flood of baby boomers currently retiring, and the fact that women live longer men, scripture remains relevant to today’s most important issues, which includes long-term medical care for the elderly. About 70 percent of people over age 65 can expect to need long-term care services at some point in their lives. That varies in cost depending on circumstances, even with the help of Medicare. Consulting a financial planner about implementing wealth preservation strategies long before you or a loved one needs long-term care is a prudent precaution.
• Proverbs 23:10 – “Don't stealthily move back the boundary lines or cheat orphans out of their property ….” The Bible is filled with ethical guidelines regarding cheating people out of what is rightfully theirs. But modern estate management is rife with moving boundary lines as tax legislation changes the rules. That makes it difficult for many people to ensure they – and their heirs – keep what is theirs. To afford life in retirement and leave a legacy for one’s family, the three most important areas to understand are how estate taxes work, critical documents and management tactics. If you’re a wealthy individual, for example, umbrella liability insurance adds an extra layer of protection between your assets and a potential lawsuit.
• Acts 20:35 – “In everything I've done, I have demonstrated to you how necessary it is to work on behalf of the weak and not exploit them. You'll not likely go wrong here if you keep remembering that our Master said, ‘You're far happier giving than getting.’ ”Americans are a generous people, giving an estimated $300 billion a year to charity. From veterans’ issues to ALS to children with cancer to homelessness, giving is in the DNA of those who have prospered from a solid work ethic. When giving, know how your money will be spent – ask questions. And, consider giving to organizations that need it; many universities and hospitals are flush with money. Finally, consider giving your time as well – volunteering is rewarded with great satisfaction.
About C. Ernie Nivens

After completing his bachelor’s degree in English from Francis Marion University, he earned his Master’s of Divinity from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. He retired from the ministry in 1990 and began his career as a financial professional. Nivens completed his master’s in Financial Services, MSFS, with an AEP (Accredited Estate Planner), in 2002. A popular speaker in the industry, he is also the author of three books: “Bakers Dozen,” “A Light in the Darkness: Insights of a Southern Christian Gentleman,” and “Southern Fried Hope,” a mystery.
Secretary Praises, Thanks Veterans, Service Members
DoD News, Defense Media Activity
WASHINGTON, Nov. 11, 2014 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel honored veterans and service members past, present and future in a Veterans Day message released yesterday.
The full text of the message follows:
Veterans Day Message
As Written by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Washington, D.C., Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Every year, we set aside Veterans Day to honor all the men and women who've served our country in uniform. We celebrate veterans from generations past. We welcome a new generation of veterans home from war. And we thank our future veterans, still serving at home and abroad.
They are securing our nation through their engagement across the globe. Some are in West Africa, contributing to the global effort to stop the spread of Ebola. Some are in the Middle East, working closely with our coalition partners in the fight against ISIL. And some are in Afghanistan, where next month the United States will responsibly end the longest war in our history.
For our troops serving around the world today, and those transitioning out of the military, our obligations are only beginning. Taking care of them, and their families, is a sacred responsibility we must always uphold.
Let's celebrate them by telling their stories. Let's help those who need it, while supporting their strength and resilience. And let's honor our veterans by creating new opportunities for them to contribute after their service, so they can continue making a difference in the world.
To all our veterans thank you. Thank you for everything you've done for our country. You're among the best our nation has to offer. God bless you and your families, and happy Veterans Day.
NGVAmerica Launches New Natural Gas Station Mapping Tool
Washington, D.C. — NGVAmerica today launched the NGVAmerica Station Analysis Map, a unique tool that maps the nation’s natural gas stations and highlights the vehicle ranges supported by the stations in 100, 400 and 600 mile increments.
In addition to vehicle range, the NGVAmerica Station Analysis Map features the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on the nations compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling infrastructure, including station locations, accessibility and contact information. This information is derived from the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) and is updated monthly.
The NGVAmerica Station Analysis Map is made available to the public so that both fleet operators and consumers can take advantage of the tool to make route and travel planning easy. NGV industry leaders also will benefit from this tool, which can help to identify opportunities for new station construction and help to identify key markets.
“The new NGVAmerica Station Analysis Map is an important addition to our online resources that help further expand the use of natural gas as a vehicular fuel,” said NGVAmerica President Matt Godlewski. “This tool will help industry leaders, fleet operators, and consumers alike to further promote and take advantage of clean-burning, domestically abundant natural gas.”

5 Ways to Ensure Your Marketing Video Will Suck
Online video marketing has become a staple, with 81 percent of companies producing video content for their websites and 69 percent producing it for social media, according to the 2014 Online Video Production Trends Report.
“There are loads of marketing videos on the web now, and some extremely effective,” says Jennifer Santoro, integrative marketing specialist and Chief Happiness Officer for InVidz Smart Video Technology, (http://InVidz.com). “But there are plenty that just don’t work.”
Santoro says she’s noticed common themes among the latter group. Based on those, here are her five ways to ensure your marketing video will suck.
1. The Video Takes Too Long to Get to the Point
In the age of the “tweet,” marketers have only a few seconds to capture a viewer’s attention. In order to get the viewer to engage, a marketer must put serious thought into what the main point of the video is, and then clearly communicate that message as quickly as possible. The attention span for video watching seems to be about 60 seconds, so viewers don’t want to hear a marketing message that goes on and on. Every word counts! Don’t use five words when three will do. This is where the practice of writing, rewriting and then rewriting a script helps.2. The Video Content is Inauthentic
Today’s consumers value authenticity and they can smell B.S. a mile away. Never try to portray yourself or your company as something you’re not. Embrace who you are and what you actually offer; people will relate to and engage with that content. As soon as viewers suspect pretense, their trust will be gone. In today’s market, the truth shall set you free. Take some time for self-reflection about what you offer potential customers and authentically communicate that message.3. Distracting Noises on the Audio
Rule of thumb: The visual can suck but the audio can’t! Visually you don’t have to do anything fancy. A simple shot of you speaking in front of a nice background will never be distracting. However, distracting noises in the audio will kill your video every time. If you’re on a budget, put your money towards a decent microphone as opposed to a fancy camera. It’s amazing what you can do visually with an iPhone! However, without a proper microphone, the recording will pick up too many distracting noises. Try the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone to get started. It’s affordable and compatible with an iPhone; you just need the adapter.4. The Intention of the Video is not Clear
This goes back to No. 1 and the importance of putting serious thought into the point of the video. Too often we get distracted by special effects and features, or telling elaborate stories, and forget that the video needs to have a clear and concise message.Never shoot a video simply because you think you’re supposed to have a video. If that’s the only reason you’re shooting one, you’re pretty much guaranteeing it won’t be strong because it will lack intention for the viewer. BEFORE you ever pick up your audio equipment and camera, spend significant time clarifying the intention of the video and composing your script around that intention.5. Viewers Can’t Take Immediate Action
The whole point of a marketing video is to get your viewer to take some sort of action. Internet video marketing technology has advanced significantly with the dawn of the smart video, which allows viewers to take immediate action directly from the video itself. We all know the power of the impulse buy! Consumers are much more likely to follow through on a decision if they can act upon it instantly. Therefore, smart videos are a marketing video’s best friend. If you haven’t already started using a smart video marketing platform for your videos, it’s time to start. InVidz.com has made the process extremely easy and affordable. It even offers a free membership to get you started.
“Remember the rule of quality over quantity,” Santoro says. “One extremely effective video is better than 10 ineffective videos.
“When considering your next marketing video, check down this list to ensure it doesn’t suck. You’ll see the difference in your conversion rates!”
About Jennifer Santoro
Jennifer Santoro holds a master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication and Management from the Florida State University and is a specialist in online video marketing. She’s the Chief Happiness Officer for InVidz Smart Video Technology, (http://InVidz.com). Bernards Selected to Build New Tower at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital
Los Angeles, CA, November 11, 2014 – Bernards, a nationally ranked commercial builder headquartered in Los Angeles, has been selected to serve as design-builder for the construction of a new $110 million, six-story tower at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, a 238-bed not-for-profit community hospital and trauma center located in the Santa Clarita Valley, approximately 33 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Bernards has partnered with the Los Angeles office of HMC Architects for this project which was awarded in June 2014 and is scheduled for completion in May of 2018. The new six-story, 160,000-square-foot patient tower will connect to the existing hospital and will add 116 private room beds. The hospital is located at 23845 McBean Parkway in Valencia, California.
The new tower will feature a dedicated maternity floor including twenty Anti-Partum / Post-Partum (before and after birth) private room beds, along with six LDR (Labor/Delivery/Recovery) private room beds. There will also be two operating rooms for C-Section deliveries. Other features of the tower include three floors of medical surgical private room beds, a helipad on the roof, and new kitchen/servery/dining areas with a soothing exterior dining garden space. One floor of the tower (21,500 SF) will be left as shell area ready for the hospital’s future build out of thirty-three additional private room beds. The project will also include a new loading-receiving dock and a free standing indoor/outdoor central plant.
“We are very pleased that Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has selected Bernards to lead the design and construction of this important new healthcare facility,” said Greg Simons, Bernards’ chief operations officer. “With our design partner, HMC Architects, our team will closely collaborate with the Hospital to achieve their facility objectives and provide the community with additional high quality patient care.”
“Our healthcare team has extensive experience working in partnership with architects to make design/build projects a win-win,” commented Steve Pellegren, DBIA who is Bernards’ executive vice president. “California healthcare projects are particularly complex because of the nuances associated with the OSHPD (Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development) approval process. One tool our design-build team uses to manage the intricacies of a project like this is the use of highly advanced technology like BIM, which when utilized in the field is readily accessed on handheld tablets,” Pellegren explained, noting that this technology ultimately saves the cost of hundreds of labor man-hours.
Bluebeam software used by Bernards converts files and drawings into PDFs and allows team members to edit, add, delete or rotate pages; search PDFs for keywords or symbols; share and store an unlimited number of documents; and collaborate in real time with project partners. The program also electronically compares document revisions and automatically generates hyperlinks for large document sets.
Over the years, Bernards has built a number of healthcare projects throughout Southern and Central California. The firm is currently also under way on a new $85 million, 25-bed, 79,000-square-foot hospital in Tehachapi, Calif., as the lead partner in a Joint Venture with Colombo Construction of Bakersfield for the Tehachapi Valley Health Care District. Other recent healthcare projects include two facilities at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles - a new concourse building, featuring a main entrance and lobby, waiting areas, chapel, gift shop, garden trellis and porte-cochere, and a 60,000-square-foot, three-story medical office building with three levels of parking.
Bernards, which is celebrating its 40thanniversary this year, is an award-winning commercial construction firm. In recent years, projects built by Bernards have been recognized with various awards: One Santa Fe and 8500 Burton Way received 2014 Los Angeles Architectural Awards; 8500 Burton Way also received 2013 awards from Engineering News Record and Los Angeles Business Journal; the El Encanto Hotel restoration project received the 2013 Santa Barbara Beautiful President’s Award; White Memorial Medical Center’s New Main Entrance Complex received the LA Business Journal’s Healthcare Project of the Year in 2012; and Claremont McKenna College’s Kravis Center received the 2011 Engineering News Record ‘Best of the Best’ Award forBest Higher Education/Research Project, as well as a 2012 Los Angeles Business Journal Architectural Award and awards from the City of Claremont, Los Angeles Business Council and a Cal-OSHA Golden Gate Safety Award.

Unbroken Line of Vets Keeps America Free, Biden Says
By Jim Garamone
DoD News, Defense Media Activity
ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, Va., Nov. 11, 2014 - An unbroken line of veterans has kept the United States and its freedoms safe since the founding of the republic, Vice President Joe Biden said today at America's most sacred shrine.
Biden thanked veterans and their families for their efforts and sacrifices during Veterans' Day ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater.
The vice president placed a wreath at the tomb and delivered remarks to about 2,000 veterans.
"Every single generation of veterans throughout our history has been the best that this country has had to offer," he said. "It is as true today as it was 200 years ago when a generation of warriors held the ramparts at Fort McHenry against the full might of the British navy in the Battle of Baltimore."
That battle, the vice president reminded the audience, inspired Francis Scott Key to write what became the U.S. national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner.
In the song, Key asks the question "does that star-spangled banner yet wave?" and the vice president used that question to illustrate the contributions of veterans through American history.
"Did that star-spangled banner wave in the hands of Civil War Sergeant William Carney, the first African-American Medal of Honor recipient, as he took that banner from a falling comrade and charged the ramparts of Fort Wagner?" he said.
Did it wave, Biden asked, "over observation posts that Medal of Honor Recipient Sergeant Ryan Pitts held against enemy rocket-propelled grenades and machine gunfire in the Kunar Valley in Afghanistan?"
Did it wave, he asked, over five Marines and a Navy corpsman atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima?
"Did that star-spangled banner yet wave over American troops in trenches in Frances, beaches of Normandy, mountains of Korea, jungles of Vietnam, streets of Fallujah and the valleys of Afghanistan?" he asked. "And does that star-spangled banner yet wave over every forward position, ship, base, woman and man deployed in the service of our nation today?"
Generations of veterans have ensured the answer to Key's question is yes, the vice president said. And this is because "as every adversary in every age who has ever come up against you has learned, American warriors never bend, never break and never, ever, ever yield," the vice president said. "That's why, as I tell every foreign leader I encounter, it's never, never, ever been a good bet to bet against the United States of America, because we have you."
"Veterans Day at the Wall" Ceremony As Delivered by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington, D.C., Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Thank you all very much.
Jake [Tapper], thank you. Thank you for your talent and your time today.
I want to recognize an individual who has already been recognized this afternoon, Jan Scruggs... and appropriately recognized as the individual who wasn't maybe solely responsible for this memorial being built, but single-handedly did as much as any one individual, with a pretty spectacular team, many are here today to support him. To Jan Scruggs, and the board that stepped forward at a time that was difficult, when a lot of people didn't believe that they could do it, nor the reason as to why they were recognizing the warriors, not the war but the Vietnam veterans. So to Jan Scruggs and many of his original board members who are here today, and others who have stepped in and followed the leadership of Jan and that original board, cast of characters back in 1979, we want to recognize them again today especially on this 30th anniversary of the Statue of the Three Soldiers.
So to Jan I know you're in New York; I just talked to him a week ago and to many of your board members here, the current board members, those who continue to support this effort and one other thing, the effort to build an educational center, which is not complete yet. It will be. Your continued support to help that get accomplished, that connects this in ways that few memorials do. So thank all of you who've continued to work on that effort. We have a few miles to go, but it is a worthy and noble effort. So thank you all very much.
To all the veterans here today, thank you. To your families, thank you. To the veterans who are not here today, and their families, we also want to acknowledge your service and your sacrifices.
And to those who have not worn our nation's uniform, thank you. Thank you for supporting these men and women, these veterans. Thank you for serving in a special capacity. Thank you for supporting our men and women today in uniform, and their families, who are all over the world doing incredible work on behalf the security of this country a world that is dangerous, complicated, interconnected, and it is requiring skill sets of our military and these men and women that we've never had to have before. So for your support, for our country's support of these men and women doing this incredible job for all of us, thank you.
Forty-five years ago today, I attended my first Veterans Day ceremony as a veteran. I was a student at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. I had returned from Vietnam with my brother Tom a few months before that.
I've always remembered that Veterans Day in 1969, because it reminded me of the one constant throughout the Vietnam War the one constant that many of you out here today recall from that war. And that constant was the uncommon valor of Americans the uncommon valor of Americans from every corner of this country. They were the quiet heroes, the quiet heroes of our time. Some of these veterans are here today... and the names of many more are memorialized on the Wall behind us.
This Wall means many things to many people. As it records the names of the past, and reflects on our hopes for the future, it also offers a reminder a message that carries across generations:
The Wall reminds us to honor those who defend our country... from making sure they're treated with the dignity and the respect and the appreciation they deserve, to caring for those who return home with visible and invisible wounds of war. Regardless of when or where or what war they served in, taking care of our people is a sacred responsibility that we must always honor.
The Wall reminds us to be honest in our telling of history. There is nothing to be gained by glossing over the darker portions of a war, the Vietnam War, that bitterly divided America. We must openly acknowledge past mistakes, and we must learn from past mistakes, because that is how we avoid repeating past mistakes.
The Wall reminds us that we must never take the security of our country for granted, ever. And we must always question our policies that send our citizens to war, because our nation's policies must always be worthy worthy of the sacrifices we ask of the men and women who defend our country.
Every month I have a private lunch with junior enlisted personnel from all the services. What they tell me and what every American should know is that today's servicemembers don't want to be glorified or given special treatment or given special privileges. The entire 9/11 generation volunteered to serve at a time of war at a time our nation was threatened, was attacked and they have a strong desire to continue making a difference in the world... whether by staying in the military, finding a job that engages them every day outside the military, pursuing another outlet for public service, or just being involved in their local communities. They don't need a hand-out or a hand-up they just want the opportunity to continue proving themselves. It falls on us to make sure that they get that opportunity... the opportunity that too many veterans have been denied in the past.
So on Veterans Day, and every day, let's celebrate our troops, our veterans, their families by telling their stories stories that inspire us all, generation after generation after generation so that others can understand what these men and women have done for our country. Let's help those who need it, while supporting their strength and their resilience. And let's honor our veterans by creating new opportunities new opportunities for them to contribute after their service in uniform, so they can continue to help make a better world.
Ladies and gentlemen, I've always been grateful for an opportunity to share this day, on this location, at this memorial, with veterans and their families. It is a high privilege.
Thank you.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11, 2014 - First Lady Michelle Obama and Disney's Doc McStuffins saluted military veterans and their children at the White House yesterday.
The first lady hosted military children at a showing of the Disney Channel show that dealt with military deployments and the effects on families.
"On Veterans Day, we celebrate families like yours because your moms and dads, and maybe for some of you your grandparents, or aunts or uncles, or brothers and sisters are serving our country, and they're making sure it's safe for everybody in this country," Obama said before the screening.
"We're so proud of them, but, more importantly, we're proud of you all," she continued.
Americans are proud of military children because "your moms and dads couldn't do what they do unless you were really smart, really kind and really patient," the first lady said.
Doc McStuffins is aimed at younger children. The show features a young lady Dottie McStuffins who wants to grow up to be a doctor like her mother. When she wears a stethoscope, her toys come to life and she ensures they are well and follows the medical rules in her "Big Book of Boo-boos." She also gives advice to young watchers on staying healthy.
Obama's emphasis this week continues her efforts to improve the life of service members, veterans and their families. She and Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, have worked tirelessly on the Joining Forces campaign. The organization looks to hire veterans and inform the American people of the contributions vets make each and every day.
A key part of the campaign recognizes families, and Obama told the McStuffins audience that, too. "You guys are sacrificing just as much as your moms and dads are, and we are so very, very proud of you," she said. "Do you know that?"
HONORING THE UNKNOWNS
3 things will bring America back – Passion – Priorities and Focus
By Dr. Laurie Roth
Passion
It is no mystery that American history is full of ‘first times’ ‘courage’ and ‘passion.’ We so wanted and treasured our freedom that our founders made their wealth, reputation, safety and even lives submit to their passion for freedom. It cost big and they gave big.
No attitude reflecting ‘common sense’ ‘scientific study’ ‘tyranny or control’ ever could form a country like America and last for 10 seconds. Passion and courage built America up layer upon layer and achievement upon achievement. Our passion was formed and protected by our belief and submission to the God of the Holy Bible. He not only protected and blessed us but also has used us in unprecedented ways to protect the heart of freedom throughout the world when tyrants have risen up.
The mid term election was a God inspired victory full of conservative and old fashion passion. Our passion won against, voter fraud – against bigger budgets – against a sea of ruthless attack ads and the lies of Obama. It also won against the discouragement that had riddled us with holes for the last 6 years. Americans have just been reminded what a bunch of tattered, bleeding and wounded soldiers can do when they lean on each other and rise out of the trenches and fight against all odds. Welcome back Americans.
Passion must reflect American priorities to win
Americans have won in 2014 and we must win again in 2016. We cannot do that if we don’t pick our battles and priorities wisely. They are all around us – things that need investigated, fixed, undone, repealed and defunded. Our reputation has been shredded by Obama and that must be dealt with as well.
Conservatives must humbly seek the wisdom of God and reflect the people’s wants and needs this time. Top priorities to attend to: Repeal and destroy the very damaging Obamacare; Stop the invasion of illegal aliens, crimes and diseases at our borders – Amnesty must be defunded if Obama pulls his threatened executive order; Create real tax reform giving families and businesses desperately needed relief; build back our military where it should be – not where Obama has drug it to.
We must see leadership be able to identify real evil and stand against it here and abroad. No more kiss up to the UN, New world order agenda with the greens movement and sustainability. We want no more kiss up, funding or hanging out with radical Islam here or abroad. This will all take a HOUSE and SENATE operating on American passion peppered with real priorities.
Passion and real priorities will bring us to the finish line if we have focus
Americans are famous for talking big, entertaining with flair, starting a race looking like John Wayne then getting distracted and finishing like Pee Wee Herman. We must keep focus on our ‘America saving’ priorities, fueled by our passion. We cannot undo the endless Obama damage, and build back to being a light on a hill again by starting big then forgetting – by starting and stopping – by compromising with the enemy anymore. Focus – Focus – Focus.
Our distractions, miss-directions and rebellion against God have made our country vulnerable. The ‘Obama rule’ practically turned us into Obama’s Frankenstein…full of progressive, new world order and Muslim body parts. Obama has ripped off most of our limbs and has been staring with eager anticipation at the heart monitor waiting for us to flat line. Instead, this last election we ripped out the IVs, ripped off our restraints and finally got our heart moving. Obama stared in horror as Americans ran down the hall, running past Obamacare security guards and Zombie-progressive nurses…demanding our return.
Not this time Obama. Americans have regained their God inspired passion and have found their priorities. We have our scopes focused this time and yes we are focused on our survival.

Veterans Day Message As Written by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Washington, D.C.
