LOS ANGELES, CA—Today the Metro Planning & Programming Committee unanimously approved Metro staff's recommendation on a vote to move forward with an additional analysis on the two proposed routes for the extension of the Gold Line Eastside Light Rail Line.
Testifying before the Committee were a broad and diverse coalition of supporters along the proposed Washington Boulevard alignment. Supporters included local business owners, housing advocates, community activists, environmental advocates, planning experts, healthcare representatives, students and educators from Whittier College and elected representatives of the Washington Boulevard alignment.
“The Washington Boulevard alignment reflects public transportation needs for residents of the east side, successfully connecting residents to jobs through the heart of Los Angeles and reaching people where they work, shop an live,” said David Lara, Whittier resident and president of the Washington Boulevard Coalition.
This action paves the way to environmentally analyze and refine the studies of the two alignments, ultimately leading to approval of the Gold Line Eastside extension routes.
"Today was another critical step in bringing rail transit to these communities," said Owen Newcomer, Councilmember City of Whittier. "Our diverse coalition thanks the Committee and the Metro staff for moving this critical project forward."
